Fleet Feet, Swift Fins by ~toonham:icontoonham:

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.00

The day of the tailball match has arrived. Mark, Ashelyn, and Zy put on their breathing necklaces and jump into the pond entrance to the underwater level. Hyou, Lily, and Fallon are waiting.

“Wow… What are those things?” asks Ashelyn, pointing at the forearm guards that her friends are wearing.

Lily extends her arms to show them off. “These are our uniforms. They have our team colours and logos.”

“We’re the Seadragon Orchids,” mentions Fallon. “Lily picked out the name. It’s her favourite flower.”

“It’s a bit before the stadium opens, but we need to warm up,” says Hyou. “Anyway, friends of the team get to watch from the best sections.”

The six of them pair up and head to the stadium. Ashelyn takes Hyou, Fallon pulls Mark, leaving Zy and Lily to go together. Hyou and Fallon race each other, pulling their passengers along. Lily and Zy move along at a slower, more relaxed pace.

Zy pipes up when the others are out of earshot. “You don’t seem as excited as the others, Lily.”

“Just nerves. I’m all stiff.  I’ve never had so many people watch us play before. Besides, Hyou and Fallon are really counting on me.”

“Is it also because of your siren powers? You’re scared….that Hyou, Fallon, and the others will feel your doubt….”

“You catch on quick, Zy. You’re kind right, though. All we can do now is see what happens.”

At the stadium, Zy, Mark, and Ashelyn are dropped off at the front row. Team Seadragon Orchids swims onto the field to start warming up. Mark looks up and down the stands. Several mermaids and mermen float in groups observing the players practicing,

possibly placing bets on the future winners. A stray eye points their way now and then.

“I think the game is not the only attraction here,” notes Mark.

“Don’t be so surprised,” says Zy. “We’re here to cheer and support.”

“I actually like the attention,” says Ashelyn as she winks at a merman who was admiring every inch of her long legs.

Hyou, Lily, and Fallon meet the members of the opposing team, the Orca Raiders. All three mermaids have the same look: ghostly white hair and coal-black tails. The captain is the one with frighteningly blood-red eyes. All six players shake hands before

returning to their warm-ups.

The stadium is full just minutes before the toss-up. Ay is shoulder-to-shoulder with Mark and Ashelyn, but it’s the mermaid leaning on her back that is bothering her. Since the other two are not complaining, Zy puts her focus on the game about to start. Team

Seadragon Orchids take their positions while the official flips a gold coin.

It’s in the Orchids’ favour and the game begins.

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.01

Thirty minutes later, neither team has made a score. Most of the humans in the crowd just perceive a swarm of six merpeople passing around a ball. However, they and the audience around them are silent at the tension mounting.

Fallon steals the ball and passes it to Lily. The three mermaids focus on the Orchids’ captain. She gets tackled hard, but not before tossing the ball to Hyou. Half the stadium erupts into cheering and the sounds of blown conch shells. Mark, Zy, and Ashelyn

join in the loudness of it all. Hyou swims to the other side of the field and smashes the seaweed ball into the floating net with his tail. The score is now 5-0. Forty-five more is needed for a win.

The mermaid floating behind Zy taps her on the shoulder. “Big Seadragon Orchids fan?”

“Yeah,” replies Zy. “You, too?”

“Of course!” says the mermaid. “Who’s your favourite player?”

“I’d have to say that Hyou is. He’s an excellent player, isn’t he?”

“He sure is, but isn’t he such a hottie?”

“Yeah… sure….” Zy turns back to watch the excitement on the field. The score is now 37-34.

“Humph, you’ll never net yourself a merguy with that attitude,” the mermaid goes back to yelling and screaming her favourite team on.

When the score reaches 47-47, both Hyou and Lily are grappling with the defenders. Fallon is left holding the ball while facing off with the Raiders’ captain. A rush of cheers signals Lily breaking through the defenders. Fallon whips the ball high into the water

and Lily hits it into the net for the game-winning score. The two teams shake hands before departing from the field. Team Seadragon Orchid heads straight for their friends to celebrate their victory. The merpeople all around them swim over to congratulate

their favourite team. The mermaid behind Zy carelessly pushes the human aside to get close to her crush.

When the crowds disperse, only that mermaid is still there. She is praising Hyou for absolutely everything he did in the match. Fallon and Lily are just rolling her eyes listening to her. Mark and Ashelyn swim backwards a bit so they don’t have to listen to any

more of the mermaid’s nonsense. On the other hand, Zy swims up and pats Hyou on the back.

“That was an amazing match, Hyou! I’m so proud of you!”

“Thanks, Zy! I take it you enjoyed the game?”

The mermaid fan eyes the smiles on their faces. “You two know each other?” Her own smile is fading.

“Yeah,” replies Zy. “We’re best friends.”

“Interesting,” says the mermaid. “I’ll see you later then, Hyou. Good luck on your next match.”

Hyou whispers into Zy’s ear when the mermaid is gone. “What was that? It’s not like you.”

Zy stares fiercely in the mermaid’s direction. “Just a little payback.”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.02

The next day, Zy wakes up early for her first round of classes. Neither Ashelyn nor Mark has anything scheduled until noon so she is technically alone. Breakfast is quiet since putting on the news would just depress her. It’s not a very good way to start the day.

When she gets up and loads a few books into her bag, a familiar dreamy voice calls her.

“Nervous?” It’s Lily grabbing onto the edge of the pond.

“Uh… yeah...” says Zy, caught by surprise. “You can feel it down there?”

“Yeah, well, your emotions are practically screaming. I thought you were in trouble.”

“No, no, no. I’m fine. I just have a lot on my mind.” Zy pauses. “Can you tell me what other people are feeling?”

“No! That’s private,” says Lily.

“Oh, uh, right. I see. Forget I said anything. I’ll be going now.”

Zy waves good-bye to Lily as she hurries out the door. The sun is barely up but the streets and walkways are full of students and professors on their way to class. She pulls out a map to fins the building for her first class.

Some shoulder knocks Zy aside, causing her to almost fall over. “Oh, uh, sorry.” The person is gone before Zy can see who it is.

The lecture hall Zy has been looking for is still mostly empty. The professor is already there, apparently going through his notes. To her surprise, it’s Professor Klein. He immediately recognizes her upon looking up. He beckons her up to his desk.

“Good morning, Miss Vorres. Looks like you’re my first student today, but you shouldn’t have come so early.”

“Good morning, Professor Klein. I am actually here because I made a decision on what we discussed last time.”

Professor Klein’s ears perk up as he sits up straight. “Really? And what have you decided?”

With the sun lighting up the ocean, Hyou and Fallon head off to their first class. According to the schedule, it’s being held in a cave below the sea floor. A gaping hole in the sand tells them they found the place. The hall is remarkably large with glowing coral

crowding the ceiling. The class begins on time at eight o’clock. Fallon points out the magic clock on the wall.

“Never seen so much human and merperson stuff in the same place… How does it work underwater?” asks Fallon.

“Magic. SSU synchronizes time for attendance and testing,” replies Hyou.

“Hyou! Fallon!” Mark clumsily swims over and sits down next to Hyou. “I’m glad I’m not alone here!”

“Mark,” says Fallon,” you’re taking biology?”

“Yeah, I wanna be a marine biologist. My advisor said this lecture would be better than one taken on land. What about you guys?”

“This is a science requirement for us. Just some gen. ed. stuff,” says Hyou. “Let’s listen, I hear this professor is excellent.”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.03

Ashelyn races furiously to her first class. It’s farther than she imagined and she wants to get a good seat. The other people get out of her way, but she gets the feeling that someone is racing right beside her.

“Hey, Ashelyn! I couldn’t help but follow you.” It’s Will, the centaur she met a couple days back.

“Hello, Will. Are you heading to class, too?”

“I’m just coming back from class.”

When they get to the right building, Will politely escorts her inside to the room. Pretty ordinary for this university, except her classroom is pitch dark while noisy with people. As she crosses the threshold with Will, it feels like all the unseen eyes are on her.

Ashelyn feels around for a switch. “It’s so dark… Where are the lights?”

“NO! Don’t touch the lights!”

“Don’t! Here’s a candle!”

A pair of hands force a candle into Ashelyn’s clenched fist. Another hand ignites the wick with a lighter to give it a strange purple flame. Still, a gentle light reveals the room to her and Will. It’s full of rather pale humans but their toothy grins give them away.

They’re vampires.

Ashelyn backs slowly into Will who reflexively puts his arms around her. One of the vampires steps up, causing both of them to jump.

“Calm down. We won’t bite or harm you… unless you make certain not to make jokes about a certain book.”

Ashelyn finds herself giggling at the joke. The vampires’ smiles fill her with more warmth than she was prepared for. Even Will relaxes his hold on her.

“I’ll, uh, see you later,” says Will. He bows and trots away. One of the vampires takes Ashelyn and sits her next to him. It’s the same vampire who gave her the candle and made her laugh. He is not what she expected in a vampire. His clothing is rather fine for a

university student; it’s all unique and designer. This guy could have stepped out of a manga or something.

“Hello. My name is Joaquin de Valencia. I’m pleased to make your acquaintance. What would your name be?”

“Ashelyn Kasaccio. It’s nice to meet you, too.”

He shifts closer so that the candle in Ashelyn’s hand sheds light on his features. Joaquin’s sharp eyes are a creepy blood red. He’s showing her his sharper canines but there’s no threat there. In fact, she doesn’t feel unsafe here. Hopefully, they are as friendly

as they make themselves to be.

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.04

Mark swims up the River Greek from the ocean. The water is colder than last time, but it does not stop him from going on. He can see the cave already. Mark pokes his head in. Pink coral fills his eyes and warm water graces his goose bumps.

“Kara? You there?”

“Mark! How are you, cutie?” Kara swims in from deeper within the cave.

“I’m great. I wanted to know if you wanted to go out.”

“Sure! I’d love to! What did you have in mind?”

“I want you to meet my friends. You already know Lily and Fallon, but I don’t think the others have had the pleasure of seeing you up-close.”

“That’s excellent!” exclaims Kara. “Are they back at the dorm?”

“They should be. Do you wanna go now?”

“Of course!”

Back at Harp Hall, Ashelyn steps out of the pond followed by Hyou and Fallon. While they dry off, Ashelyn lies on the couch. Mark spilled water on it yesterday and found absolutely everything was waterproof. She had to physically stop him from testing the

toaster under the faucet. Hyou and Fallon get up and sit on either side of Ashelyn.

“So…” says Hyou. “Vampires and centaurs… You’re adjusting well.”

“Will is great, but I don’t know much about Joaquin. Vampires aren’t as bad as the legends say, are they?”

“Like all of us, there’s a mix of good and bad people. The SSU vampires are no different. Every now and then, the hospital takes in humans with bites on their necks. Violence is rare and death is unheard of. I wouldn’t worry,” Fallon smiles.

“Yeah,” pipes in Hyou. “The more people you meet, the better off you are.”

“Hey, guys,” calls out Mark as he walks in. “I want you to meet Kara.”

Kara steps in with only a skirt and long hair for cover. She almost floats in as if she were at home in the air. Ashelyn and Hyou get up to say hello. Fallon just stays seated and smiles at the newcomer. Kara immediately pats Hyou on the head and messes with

his hair.

“What’s up, shrimp?”

“Nothing really. I haven’t seen much of you since you started school here.”

“Yeah, well, the sorority is keeping me busy,” says Kara. “Oh, you must be Ashelyn. Hyou has told me so much about his human friends.”

Mark grabs Hyou by the arm and pulls him aside. “How do you know Kara?” He’s clearly irritated.

“Dammit, Mark. Your jealousy knows no bounds, does it? Kara was my guardian growing up.”

“Hyou’s right, Mark,” adds Kara. “We can all hear you. If this is how you treat your friends, I wonder how you would treat mine.”

Mark lets go of Hyou’s arm, but everyone can make out the reddish mark left by his grip. Both Fallon and Ashelyn rise up and march in Mark’s direction, but Hyou steps in their way.

“It’s fine. It’s fine. You’re just overexcited, aren’t you, Mark?”

Mark’s eyes don’t leave Hyou’s stare. “Yeah, yeah. I just need to excuse myself for a minute.” He turns and makes his way to the washroom.

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.05

While Mark is off in the washroom, Hyou confronts Kara. He is still rubbing his arm where Mark gripped him.

“Since when has been acting like this?” he asks.

“Just now. I swear,” says Kara.

“You think he’s ill or something?” suggests Ashelyn. “He’s been a bit moody the past few days.”

The bathroom door creaks open and everyone goes silent. The thud in the hallway forces everyone running to see what is going on. They all gasp seeing Mark flat on the floor with blood seeping out of his mouth.

“Wha- what happened?” asks Ashelyn. “What do we do?”

“Hey, where is everyone?” It’s Zy.

Hyou runs to the kitchen to meet her. “Zy! Come over here! We need to get Mark to a hospital!”

In the waiting room, Zy and the others are sitting around hoping for news to arrive as quick as possible. Hyou and Fallon sit next to one another with Hyou resting his head on his girlfriend’s shoulder. Kara’s buried in a magazine, but looks up every now and

then. Zy sits down and watches the clock. She gets bored and increasingly impatient. Getting up and sitting next to Hyou is her next move. Ashelyn comes back from outside with her mobile in hand.

“I’ve just called Mr. and Mrs. Hollenvale,” she says. “They’re planning to fly over tonight.”

One of the nurses walking around approaches their group and bows her head slightly.

“Riley Asduré? Zy Vorres? I would like to see the both of you right now.”

The two of them get up and look over the rest of their friends. Confusion marks everyone’s faces. They follow the nurse and walk along several bright hallways. People they see are neither smiling nor frowning, but the whole atmosphere is just cold. Stale

hospital food smells only makes the experience worse.

The nurse stops them outside one of the patient doors. It is labeled 126. “My name is Doctor Lane. I am in charge of your friend, Mark Hollenvale. I am speaking to you two because Mr. Hollenvale listed you as his emergency references. In addition, we have

phoned his family with a report on his condition.”

“So, why have you brought us here, Doctor Lane?” asks Zy.

“Mr. Hollenvale is very sick right now. He has been falling in and out of consciousness since he has been brought here. As his emergency references, you two are given sole right to make medical decisions in his place.”

“What’s wrong with Mark?” asks Hyou.

“It’s ebola,” says the doctor solemnly.

Zy’s pupils dilate while she brings her hand over her mouth in a gasp.

The doctor nods her head and continues. “At first, we thought it was malaria, but the severe internal bleeding is a tell-tale sign of something more serious. Now, because the two of you are ranked higher than Mark’s family, I need a decision to be made.”

Zy stares lethally at the door of room 126. “Why us? And what decision do you mean?”

“Mr. Hollenvale is an adult and values the judgment of his friends over that of his own family. I hope you reciprocate by placing equal value on his trust in you.”

Hyou gulps loudly while Zy fails to blink. “Please continue…” she says.

“The decision is between two procedures to treat the ebola. The first one is purely scientific and uses the best technology available. The second one uses a combination of magic and science. Ordinarily, we would choose the second option, but Mr. Hollenvale

is human and is not within the jurisdiction of any magical government. This hospital has no right to treat him with a procedure far outside his comprehension without his consent, even if it may save his life.”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.06

Hyou remains as silent as ever but Zy feels a lot bubbling within her. “What are the risks? How much will this cost? How long is each procedure?”

“I can see why Mr. Hollenvale chose you two. None of the usual panicking or cluelessness,” comments Doctor Lane. “If you are to go the scientific route, there will be a chance the virus will come back. Powerful antibiotics and drugs will be needed until he gets

back on his feet. The cost for this and the other procedure are free; the university sets money aside for cases like this. If there are no further complications, it will take three hours plus a month for recovery.”

“And the magical procedure?” persists Zy.

“It can wholly eradicate the virus in his body. A powerful spell in conjunction with a potent potion is used. Since Mark has had neither magic nor potions applied to his body, we are unsure of how he will react; he may be oversensitive to what happens. When

this procedure is through, Mr. Hollenvale will require a week’s worth of bed-rest. Please think this through carefully.”

Doctor Lane gives each of them a nod and returns to her station. Hyou sits on one of the chairs by the door. Hesitating first, Zy sits down right next to him. Her hand gently pats him on the shoulder.

“How… how can we decide something like this?” asks Zy.

“Well, which procedure do you like?” replies Hyou.

“I don’t understand the magic procedure, and both seem equally risky. It just depends on whether the magical reaction is more or less dangerous than the possibility of the ebola returning.”

“Let’s talk it over with everyone else,” says Hyou. “They should have a say in this.”

Zy slowly gets up. “You’re right.”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.07

Just about everyone agreed. The procedure is going to use magic to eradicate the virus. Ashelyn stayed silent the entire time but nodded when they reached their resolution. She gets up and paces around while Hyou and Zy go to inform the doctor of their

decision. After a few laps around the waiting room, Ashelyn hears a seat cushion getting patted. Fallon wants her to sit next to her.

Ashelyn barely grins and takes the seat. “Thanks.”

“It’s nothing. I had no idea you cared so much about Mark. He’s going to be alright.”

“I know, but if this were any other hospital, it might not have been alright. That’s what’s so scary,” says Ashelyn, burying her eyes into her arm.

“Is something else the matter though?” asks Fallon. “You’ve been troubled the past few days. I doubt it has anything to with Mark’s illness.”

Ashelyn sniffles and brushes her eyes with her arm. “It’s stupid Logan, my brother. He proposed to some woman.”

Fallon looks bewildered. So do Lily and Kara. “Isn’t that something to be happy about?”

“No,” says Ashelyn. “They’re both stoners and she’s a criminal on top of that. Our parents were outraged and disowned Logan. Upon learning that, his fiancé ran out on him.”

All the mermaids have their hands over their mouths with their eyes wide. Lily then speaks up, “What is your brother doing now?”

Ashelyn frowns. “He’s broke, homeless, and figures he can mooch off me. Logan’s on his way here.”

Deeper inside the hospital, Hyou and Zy are seated quietly in Doctor Lane’s Office. She is examining their signatures on the procedure contract. They have already discussed Hyou and Zy’s answer.

Doctor Lane puts the contract down. “Since this is the case, we can start tonight. It will be much better that way.”

“Um, Doctor Lane?” Zy raises her hand. “I have an additional request.”

“Yes, Miss Vorres?”

“I would like to sit-in and observe what the doctors will do.”

Hyou and Doctor Lane are silent for a bit. “You are studying to be a doctor, yes? I think that should be acceptable, but you will have to watch from an adjacent room.”

“Thank you, Doctor.”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.08

Mark opens his eyes. Something smells delicious. Lunch is on a tray before him, but more importantly, Hyou and Zy are seated at his bedside. Zy is leaning on Hyou’s shoulder asleep, while Hyou is reading a newspaper.

“What happened? Why am I in the hospital?” asks Mark.

Hyou tosses the newspaper over his shoulder. “Nice to see you’re awake. You got sick and had to be hospitalized.”

“How long have I been here?”

“Exactly one week.”

“Wha- what? What happened to me?”

“You got infected with ebola somehow. You collapsed at the dorm because of a fever and severe internal bleeding. We carried you to the hospital immediately.”

“Is it over then? Do I have to get more treatment or something?”

“Probably not. The doctors used a magical procedure, so all that’s left is to test if your body had a bad reaction. Otherwise, you should be free to go.”

“Huh?” Zy rubs her eyes. “Hyou, who are you talking to? Is Ashelyn here?”

“No, it’s just me,” says Mark with a smirk.

Zy removes her hand from her sight. Her pupils widen and tears drip. Zy falls on top of her friend and locks him in her embrace. “I’m so glad you’re awake, Mark.”

Mark brings his hand to Zy’s head and pats her softly. “I’m alright, Zy. I’m alright.”

Hyou gets up when a knock is heard from the door. When he opens it, Ashelyn and Kara briskly enter. Kara walks up and kisses Mark on the forehead. “I missed you, baby.”

“I missed you, too, Kara.” Mark holds her hand. Zy stands back up and walks to Hyou’s side. Her expression is odd and seems forced.

“Me and Zy are going back,” says Hyou. “The doctors will discharge you after a final diagnostics test in a few hours.”

Mark tries to get in a comfortable position, but Kara wants to hold him as close as possible. He is more than sure that his pillows are not as comfortable as what his head is currently lying on. “So, Ashelyn, what’s been going on with you this past week.?”

“Some family things, but nothing big. It’s just Logan and his usual problems.”

Mark chuckles under his breath. “What did he do now?”

“Errr… disownment and withdrawal…”

Mark’s face stiffens. “How… I mean… What’s he doing now?”

“He’s hitchhiking and earning money to stay here while he gets his life together.”

“Okay… when will he get here.?”

“Weeks or months. I have no idea, but I’d rather have him come here. Logan would never get anything done if left on his own.”

Kara gently plays with Mark’s hair and hums a gently song. Ashelyn smiles at Mark and he looks to the window.

“Yeah… yeah… Logan can stay at the dorm, but the bum gets the couch.”

“I knew you’d understand!” Ashleyn pecks him on the cheek. “I’ll leave you to get some rest! See you in a few hours!”

Just as Ashleyn closes the door behind her, Kara turns Mark’s head around and breathes life back into him. Mark savors this as much as she does. A week definitely has been too long.

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.09

The next day, Zy leaves for class earlier than she usually does. She recites her notes to herself as the lecture hall door magically opens for her. After a week of this, Zy has gotten used to the magical tweaks here and there. The voice that hushed as she entered

still counts as unusual though. No one else is here.

Undaunted, Zy takes her place at the front row. She can feel the weight of someone’s gaze on her. It could be a student. The door only opens for them and faculty. A buzzing noise moves throughout the room; it must be a fly. The buzzing gets closer and closer and

then stops. The voice appears again.

“Good morning!” It is a young man. He is less than a third of a meter tall… and has semi-transparent fairy wings. He stands on the chair next to her.

“Oh, good morning.” From her point of view, he is not what she expected. He looks like he could be her age, but she can’t be too sure.

“Can I see your notes?” he asks. “I wasn’t here yesterday.”

“Oh, okay. I didn’t realize there were other students in here already. I also don’t think I have seen you before in class.”

“It was just me in here when you came in. I’m not that easy to spot anyway. I also watch the lecture from above everyone’s head anyway.”

“Well, here’s my notebook. Do you want me to… open it for you?”

“No, I can take it.” The fairy snaps his fingers and grows to the size of a human. He’s even slightly taller than Zy now. “My name’s Aryan.”

“I’m Zy. What’s did you miss class for?”

“I was working on a design project. It’s my major, though I want to minor in art history. This class is a prerequisite for an anatomy class I have to take next semester.” Aryan pauses. “So, I take it you want to be a doctor?”

“Yes, actually.”

“You know, you look much more beautiful when you smile. You’ve been frowning a lot in class, Zy.” Aryan brings his face a few inches closer to Zy’s.

“Was it that noticeable?” She brushes her bangs from her eyes.

“I wanted to talk to you for a few days now, but it didn’t seem right with your mood the way it was. Did you have a bad break-up or something?”

“What? No! I mean… No. I think you could have talked to me anyway; you might have made my day.”

“I know, but you looked like you were going to snap.” Aryan hands Zy her notes back. “Thanks. I didn’t want to be the target of whatever you were holding back.”

“Oh, I’m sorry about that. Do you want to get something after class? Like a drink?”

Aryan’s pointy ears perk up. “Do you mean it? I would really love that!”

“Sure, I do. I love getting to know new people.”

“Class is in session!” rings Professor Klein’s voice. Zy and Aryan look around at the students that came in while they were chatting. They’ll have to continue this later on.

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.10

Mark opens his eyes and stretches his arms. The warm morning sunlight welcomes him in his bedroom. The night before had a dinner in his honor. His stomach was still full, so breakfast was out of the question. Mark gets up and heads to the living room to

check out some sports games before the start of classes.

“Hello, Mark.”

Mark stands still. There are two people on the couch who apparently have been waiting for him. “Hi, Mom. Hi, Dad.”

Mark’s mom gets up and hugs her son. His father follows soon after. “I know you weren’t expecting us and your mother and I have been out of your life for the past year, but we came as fast as we could when we heard what happened.”

“Who told you?”

“Your friend, Ms. Kasaccio, did,” replies his mother. “She called before the hospital notified us.”

“You have work later today?”

“Yes, we do, dear,” replies his mother, “but-“

Mark clenches his fists. His father steps up rapidly. “Mark, please don’t be angry with us. We understand and accept that we haven’t been the best parents. Our work is very important, but that doesn’t excuse what we have been doing.”

An awkward silence ensues. Mark’s father continues, “I think we’d better get going then. Hopefully, we’ll see each other in a few months.” Mr. and Mrs. Hollenvale smile mournfully at Mark. He is emotionless but grants them a wave as they walk out the door.

Mark walks into Ashelyn’s room. She is lazily perusing a magazine in bed.

“Hey, Mark, do you think I’d look hotter in…” Ashelyn gets up. “Mark?”

He walks up and hugs her tightly. “Thanks for calling them.”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.11

Hyou and Fallon swim to the beach after class. At this time of day, people are heading back to class from lunch. The beach is mostly empty. They try to get on the sand, but it’s burning hot.

“I have an idea!” says Fallon. “Follow me.”

She whips her tail, diving deep into the water. Hyou follows close after her. Fallon leads Hyou to one of many coral gardens. This one in particular has many shades of pink that complement Fallon’s tail. Hyou keeps his eyes on Fallon, barely registering this

fact. Once they are surrounded by coral on all sides, Fallon throws down her backpack and Hyou does the same.

Before he can ask why she picked this place, Fallon pulls him closer. “Just so you know, I’ve waited for this…” She leans forward on him, with Hyou sinking down flat against the sand. Fallon doesn’t hesitate in closely floating above him.

“Hyou… If you’re always so shy and quiet, you’ll always be on the bottom.”

Hyou pecks her on the neck. “Maybe I like being on the bottom…”

When Ashelyn arrives in class the following day, Joaquin is at the door waiting to escort her to her desk. He’s been doing this for a week now. Will has been escorting her in the same week to the building, but has refused to enter anymore. Joaquin lights a

purple flame candle and leads her to sit next to his place. The vampires around them smile like they always have, but Ashelyn can feel an uneasy tension floating in the room. Joaquin puts his arm around her, causing Ashelyn to shiver when she feels his silk

sleeve brush against her bare neck.

“What’s wrong?” he asks. “Does it tickle?”

Ashelyn stares into a corner of the room outside the reach of the purple candle. “The professor is here.”

Clapping from the dark corner sends a shiver up everyone’s spines. A pale vampire with a seemingly calm demeanor steps into the candlelight. “It seems my fun has come to an end for now. Bravo to Ms. Kasaccio for noticing me before the rest of you. Perhaps

every one can learn to be a bit more guarded, skeptical even.”

The entire class looks on in silence. “I did not mean to cause such alarm. I just had an interest in what you did before class started when I am not around. It’s my way of getting to know you. Now then, it’s time for the first quiz of the semester! Pens and paper

are the only objects allowed on the tables! I will recite the questions and you will write down what you believe to be the best answer. Let us begin.”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.12

The rush of merpeople leaving classes fills the ocean-side campus of Southern Seas University. On her way out of the lecture hall, Lily remembers that the study group for one of her classes meets in a short while. She races to a large coral reef towards the

edge of the university. Under the reef is the main underwater dormitory. It is built into the sand much like an ant colony and is lit with glowing coral, just like all the other places.

The study group is being held in the Purple Dorms so Lily follows the purple lights until she reaches a spacious common room. A few mermen and mermaids float in a circle discussing. Each of them looks Lily’s way when she enters the room.

“What’s up, guys?” she says. “Is this the study group for Human Civilization 110?”

“Yes. Come join us, we’re just getting started.”

Lily swims between a mermaid and a merman who quietly make space for her. She is a bit disconcerted that they don’t smile back at her. However, they quickly show her the bracelets they wear. They have the logo of the Rippling Sands, the number one team

slated to win the intramural championship at the end of the semester. The Seadragon Orchids are at number three.

After the study group finishes and disperses, Lily swims over to the tailball stadium to check the schedule for the next match. It’s the Bubbles, a pretty formidable team.

“I guess we’ll have to squeeze in a few more practices,” she mumbles to herself.

“Then we’ll have to add more practices as well,” says the voice behind her.

Lily slowly spins around. Jett Squid of the Rippling Sands gives her a wave and a smile. She remembers that he is the undisputed captain of the team. The Rippling Sands are a pretty famous team for their ingenious offense. All three members are said to be

buff and huge. Jett towers over her even now.

“I wasn’t aware that my team was a threat to you, Jett.”

“Don’t sell yourself so low. I have heard many good things about the Seadragon Orchids. I look forward to having a match with your team. See you later, Lily.”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.13

The Bubbles team is indeed very tough. Half an hour into the match, they lead the Seadragon Orchids 40 to 33. Every time Hyou or Fallon try to break through, they are pulled back again. Out in the stands, their friends are worried.

“I can’t believe there are no time-outs in this game,” says Zy. “Both sides are exhausted and this could go on for another half-hour.”

“Those three will be fine,” replies Kara. “I’ve watched them play for years. This is nothing.”

The crowd screams and chants. The Bubbles scored another five points.

“Hmmm… I hope you’re right, Kara,” says Zy disdainfully.

Ashelyn leans over the railing to get a closer look. “Those three are moving a lot faster than earlier. They’re gonna burn out…”

Mark leans in as well. “Actually, it looks like Fallon’s in charge.”

Hyou passes the ball to Fallon just before getting tackled by all three members. She whips the ball with her tail. The Seadragon Orchids play becomes increasingly aggressive with each passing second. In less than fifteen minutes, Fallon scores the game-

winning point.

Mark, Ay, Ashelyn, and Kara swim down to congratulate the winning team. After several exchanges of hugs and kisses, silence comes over the undersea stadium. The seven realize they are not alone on the pitch. Jett Squid and the other two members of the

Rippling Sands swim towards them. All three are clapping in applause. Lily, Hyou, and Fallon swim up to greet them.

“One of the best matches so far in this semester,” announces Jett. “As expected of a top three team…”

“Thank you very much,” replies Lily. “What brings you three here?”

“We’re seeing how strong the competition is, and for your information, Team Seadragon Orchids exceeds expectations.”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.14

While the two team captains and their teams banter, a different conversation is happening not too far away.

“Those three mermen are intimidating,” says Ashelyn. “Just one of them looks bigger than Hyou, Lily, and Fallon combined! Who are they?”

“The Rippling Sands,” says Kara. “They’re the best team in the university and the favorite for the intramural championship.”

“Looks like they’re done talking,” says Zy as the Rippling Sands swim off.

Mark calls out to Hyou. “What was that about?”

“The Sands invited us to a party at their place this weekend,” comes the reply. “All seven of us.”

A few days later, all seven of them meet in the River Greek. The sound of music echoes from a cave before them.

“Figures, they’d be frat guys,” mumbles Ashelyn.

“Don’t be so rude,” says Lily. “Let’s go.”

The inside is much like the room where Lily, Hyou, and Fallon reside. The major difference is that there are pin-up posters of human women on the walls. All the members of the Rippling Sands greet them soon enough. Various kinds of raw fish are prepared for

them and layered neatly in the center of the room.

Jett introduces his two teammates, Jace Anem and Alex Mako, to Ashelyn, Zy, and Mark. The two are giants, just like their captain. For being the most feared tailball players in the university, they are surprisingly gentle and polite. Still, Zy, Ashelyn, and Mark

can easily see what is scary about three mermen the size of horses hurtling towards them at top speed.

“How many other people are coming?” asks Zy.

“It’s just us,” replies Jett. “We just threw a party for you and only you.”

“We wanna be charitable to our underclassmen,” adds Alex.

“That sounds kinda suspicious,” says Hyou.

“Yeah,” continues Lily, “what could you possibly gain?” She swims in between the Sands and her friends. Two of the Sands look uneasily at their captain.

Jett propels himself forward a few paces. “We would like to challenge Team Seadragon Orchid to an exhibition match, actually. I didn’t want to announce it like this though…”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.15

Lily folds her arms. “I don’t think this is to see how much of a threat we are, you should have a good estimate from the match a few days back. What are we really playing for?”

Fallon and Hyou swim to her side. Jett alone is still taller and wider than the three combined. He clears his throat and addresses them. “Officials from the Transocean Tailball Association are arriving here at SSU in a few months. They’ll be witnessing a match

and the University wants the two best teams to give it their all.”

“We’re number three,” says Fallon. “You should be asking the Jellyfish Brigade.”

“The captain of the Brigade declined for some reason,” says Jace.

“So it falls to you guys. Will you do it?” asks Jett.

Lily, Fallon, and Hyou glance at one another. “Yes.”

A wave of relief comes over the Rippling Sands. Each of them shakes hands with the Orchids. Jett puts his arms around Fallon, Hyou, and Lily and whisks them over to the food. “C’mon. Let us feast!”

Jace and Alex bring over Mark, Kara, Ashelyn, and Zy. Ashelyn taps Alex on the shoulder. “Why did you invite the rest of us if you only needed to talk to them?”

“Jett hoped you guys would persuade them if we couldn’t.”

“That doesn’t sound fair,” replies Ashelyn. “He doesn’t even know us that well.”

“I know, but he secretly thinks human legs are beautiful and wanted to see them again.”

No matter how much time passes at Southern Seas University, the weather is always hot and sunny. It is such a sleepy atmosphere that the wind feels too tired to blow and Ashelyn’s had enough of it. She drags Hyou and Fallon bodily out of the pond in the

living room. Before they can even dry off, she tosses them backpacks and skirts.

“Why do I get a skirt?” complains Hyou, holding his up.

“The last time someone lent you pants, you fell in the water and ripped them with your tail,” replies Ashelyn.

“Is it just us three?” asks Fallon. “Where are Zy and Mark?”

“Zy’s at the library going over work and stuff. Mark is alone with Kara somewhere. I didn’t feel like asking.” Ashelyn shrugs on her backpack. “Err… Fallon? Would you like a top… for support?”

Fallon looks down and considers for a bit. “Sure. Gravity can be such a pain…”

Ashelyn goes back to her room to fetch a tank top. “…I can hear you pout and whimper from here, Hyou…”

“I’m not pouting or whimpering!” he yells back.

“He actually is.”

“Fallon!”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.16

On the far end of the terrestrial-side of SSU is a hilly area covered in dense forest. It is a popular place to go hiking and camping, but that is not why Ashelyn chose it. The thick foliage make for great shade and the wind is supposed to be blowing furiously

today. Ashelyn, Hyou, and Fallon follow one of the paths into the forest.

“What do you guys think?” asks Ashelyn. “Isn’t it a great day for something like this?”

“It’s beautiful up here,” says Fallon. She walks hand-in-hand with her boyfriend.

“It’s a nice change from the beach,” says Hyou. He pecks Fallon on the cheek and lightly brushes her side with his fingertips. Seeing the look on Ashelyn’s face, the two of them shift their hands to their sides.

“What’s wrong?” asks Ashelyn uneasily.

“You were blushing,” mumbles Hyou. “We’re making you uncomfortable, aren’t we?”

“Look. What you two do is none of my business.” A bit of redness returns to Ashelyn’s face.

“If you say so…” says Hyou.

The three of them hike deeper into the forest out of earshot of the bustle of the university. Ashelyn points out a few birds and takes a few pictures of them. Hyou takes a few pictures for her while Fallon watches on quietly, inspecting each picture on the

viewfinder. She flashes a smile at Hyou.

“Let’s all take a picture,” says Ashelyn. “C’mon, we hardly hang out during the week.”

After taking the shot, Ashelyn leads them to a secluded pond in the shade of a giant oak tree. They recline at the water’s edge while she unpacks picnic items. Hyou and Fallon lay side-by-side. Fallon’s hands wander uninhibited while they share sweet words.

Ashelyn tries to ignore them but finds herself peeking and eavesdropping. She takes longer than expected to setup but those two are in their own world.

“F- food’s ready, you guys,” fumbles Ashelyn.

Fallon and Hyou freeze in the middle of a make-out session and sit up. Both of them bow their heads apologetically to Ashelyn. The three eat in silence. In the middle of it all, Ashelyn puts down her sandwich. Hyou puts his down and Fallon follows suit.

“Do you guys find me annoying?” asks Ashelyn.

“What?” replies Hyou. “No. Of course not.”

“You and Fallon stop whatever you are doing whenever you realize I’m close or paying attention. I am aware that I am the ex-girlfriend, but you’re making it very hard for me.”

“I’m sorry,” replies Hyou. “I didn’t like being so… er… intimate when you’re around, Ash. You stare sometimes.”

“I do?”

“Why?” continues Hyou.

“I… I guess I still look back to what we had, Hyou. Regardless of how I hurt you, I sincerely regret it, but what’s done is done. We’re still best friends and I desperately want to keep it that way. My resolve is shaky, but I truly am happy for you two.” Ashelyn rubs

her eyes and gets up to walk away. “Excuse me for a bit…”

Hyou moves to go after her, but he stops and looks to his girlfriend.

“Go after her. She needs you more right now,” says Fallon.

“What about you? Will you be fine?”

“I’ll be fine knowing my cute, little boyfriend isn’t an insensitive jerk to his best friends or even ex-girlfriends. Go!”

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.17

Hyou walks through the woods. He finds Ashelyn sitting at the base of a tree sobbing quietly. Hair blocks view of her eyes, but he can tell they are probably red and swollen. Hyou sits down next to her and puts his arm around her trembling body. Ashelyn peeks

out from between strands of hair to glance back.

"Wha- what are you doing?" she asks.

"You hate to be alone, remember?" says Hyou.

Ashelyn does not say a word. She cannot even make a sound. She simply leans her head on his shoulder. "You have a girlfriend. Isn't it bad for you to sit here and remember stuff about me?"

"It's like you said: we're still best friends. I can't afford to forget about you?"

"And Fallon?"

"She's waiting for us. Both of us."

"Seriously? Why would she wait for me as well?"

"You mean a lot to her because you mean a lot to me. I once heard from you or Zy that a friend of a friend is a friend. I think that's true here." Hyou rubs her shoulder. "You ready to go back?"

"In a few minutes..." whispers Ashelyn. "It's been a while since the two of us sat like this." She shifts down to lie upon Hyou's lap. He gazes down at her with gentle eyes.

"Uh... Fallon? Can you stop rubbing my leg?"

"Just kidding!"

Fallon is lying flat on the grass when Hyou and Ashelyn come back. She immediately gets on her feet and jumps into Hyou's open arms. With her head cradled next to Hyou's, she looks over at Ashelyn. The two of them share a smile.

"Did it work out well?" asks Fallon.

"Yeah," replies Ashleyn. "I feel a lot better now."

Fallon frees herself from her boyfriend's hold and pats Ashelyn on the shoulder. "I'm glad!" she says while flashing a smile.

"Sorry for making you worry," says Ashelyn.

"It's perfectly alright." Fallon pulls her into an embrace.

"C'mon over here, you guys!" yells Hyou. He's already seated at their picnic. It looks exactly like they left it. "The food's getting cold!"

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.18

Ashelyn, Hyou and Fallon laughingly have at the ice cream they have for dessert. Hyou and Fallon take big bites out of theirs. Ashelyn just settles for meager licks. The trio sit overlooking the small pond at their secluded picnic spot. They listen to the birds

and watch a herd of centaurs race in the distance.

"Oh! Hyou!" notes Ashelyn. "You have some ice cream dripping onto you." She reaches for a napkin, but Fallon licks it off without a thought.

Ashelyn reddens a bit, though she shakes it off. "Nevermind... Anyway, I'm in the mood for a swim. What about you two?"

Fallon and Hyou take the last bites of their ice cream cones. "Always!" they say in unison. The two of them stand on either side of Ashelyn as they slide off their clothing. Their friend keeps her eyes focused on the centaurs galloping through the woods. It does

not bother her as much as before, but she feels it would be impolite to stare. As soon as they finish, Fallon and Hyou sit and wait.

"What's wrong?" asks Ashelyn. "Don't you wanna jump in?"

"We're waiting for you," says Fallon who also answers with a nudge. "All three of us are having fun now. No one's getting left out."

Ashelyn feels a strong warmth deep in her chest despite the gobs of ice cream she has just inhaled. She munches on the cone as she gets up. After two weeks of being at Southern Seas University, it has become second nature to her, Zy, and Mark to add

swimwear to their everyday apparel.

Together, the three of them dive into the pond hand-in-hand. It is deeper than any of them thought. In Ashelyn's case, it is cooler than expected, but probably bearable. A few fish and tadpoles swim past her face just as she opens her eyes. Fallon lets go of her

hand and swims down to a patch of reeds. When she comes back up, Hyou and Ashelyn notice a ball in her grasp, woven from the reeds below.

"Up for a little game?" asks Fallon.

"Sure!" exclaims Ashelyn.

"Yeah!" adds Hyou.

"Excellent!" says Fallon. "The game is three-way keep-away. Whoever has this ball... Oh, right. No timer... Whoever has this ball stolen from them three times is out of the game. Last one left wins. Ready?"

Ashelyn nods. "Set."

"Go!" yells Hyou.

Back at Harp Hall, Zy gets through the door carrying a heavy stack of books and manuals. It is oddly quiet. Neither Mark nor Ashelyn are anywhere to be found. Diving to the underwater level, she finds it to be devoid of her friends. Just as she is about to go

back, up Lily swim in.

"Hey, Zy!" calls Lily. "Why are you going back up? Stay for a bit!"

Zy sinks down and sets  her feet firmly on the sand floor. "I just finished studying at the library and was wondering if anyone had some free time. It's been a tiresome day going over text and charts and more text."

"We're only two weeks in!" exclaims Lily.

"I know, but becoming a doctor is tough. I want to stay ahead so I can always make time for friends."

"Well, I'm available right now if you want."

"Oh, sure!" Zy shifts uneasily. She has no idea what Lily might like to do. The two of them have never hung out alone. "I didn't have anything in mind. This is a spur-of-the-moment thing."

"Hmmm... I heard from my brother that you like whales," says Lily thoughtfully. "If dolphins are fine too then there's a giant pod nearby that we can go visit."

"I'd love that!"

"Excellent! Let's get going!" Lily hooks her arm under Zy's and drags her to the outskirts of campus.

"What kinds of dolphins are we talking?" asks Zy. She flinches every time they pass a fish since they are simply colourful blurs at Lily's speed.

"I think humans call them... bottlenose dolphins. Not too sure."

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.19

At a glance, playing three-way keep-away against two merpeople while underwater might not seem completely fair but Ashelyn is holding her own. She guesses that it must be the daily swimming that has conditioned her. Still, Hyou and Fallon are both

accomplished athletes and very much relentless. In the same moment Hyou wrests the reed ball out of her hands, Fallon plucks it from his and wins the game.

All three of them drift to the bottom as they struggle to catch their breaths. The floor of the pond is covered in thick grasses. As they lie down, the plants part under them and then curl around their forms. It tickles ever so gently each time a blade of grass

brushes against some skin. Ashelyn, Hyou, and Fallon recline in silence while suppressing giggles. They stare up at their reflections in the mirror of the surface.

Fallon suddenly wakes up with a gasp. She looks around confused. They're still in the pond lying in the grass. Ashelyn looks back at her curiously.

"What's wrong?" asks Ashelyn.

"I must have fallen asleep," mutters Fallon. "How long was I out?"

"Only a few minutes. Hyou must have stirred you."

"Huh?" Her sleeping boyfriend is perfectly wrapped around her. His tail encircles hers, but more embarrassingly, one of his hands has reached up to grasp at her chest. Fallon swats her hand away gently. "Sorry about his bad manners..."

"Don't worry about it. It's funny watching him do that to others."

"You mean he's done that to you?" asks Fallon.

"Many times while we were going out," muses Ashelyn. "He always does it in his sleep."

"Have you ever called him out on it?"

"Only the first time... I wasn't angry, I actually liked it, but he apologized anyway."

"You know... That's actually expressing of love." Fallon adopts a starry-eyed look.

"What? Copping a feel? That's more of an expression of... well, lust."

"No, no," sighs Fallon. "The point is to put your hand over the heart of a loved one. At night, parents hold their baby close with one hand over his or her heart. If the beat of the heart or rhythm of breathing changed for an instant, they would know in a snap

and wake up. It's an old custom from days when sickness plagued our people, but it's a widespread practice."

"What about when your boyfriend does it to you?"

"I was getting to it. It's pretty simple. Your lover is your baby. You hold her close you your heart while keeping a hand close to hers, making sure she's fine."

"That's very sweet. If Hyou had told me that before, it might not have been as awkward."

"Yeah, well you know how shy he gets..."

"True..."

"What do you think the others are up to?" asks Fallon.

"Zy's studying... overstudying... Mark's out with Kara again. Those two are always at it."

Fallon and Ashelyn share a laugh. Maybe the best friend of a best friend can be a best friend as well...

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.20

Hundreds of dolphins swim and play in the distance. Lily and Zy slow their approach. Several large bottlenose dolphins patrol around the giant pod.

"Is it alright to disturb them?" asks Zy.

"They're wild dolphins, but they're friendly with humans. Actually, dolphins are even more friendly with merpeople, so you'll be fine with me here. Follow me."

The two of them swim closer to the patrolling dolphins. Two males separate from the group and inspect the mermaid and human at the edge of their territory. Zy follows Lily's lead and stays still. The dolphins gently bump them on their bellies.

"Pat them on the head," whispers Lily. "But keep your hand away from their blowholes."

Zy does as she is told and the dolphin clicks excitedly. He swims circles around her before cozying up to her side. Lily waves good-bye to her dolphin as it goes back to patrolling.

"Looks like he really likes you," says Lily. "If you grab on, I think he'll let you ride."

Zy eyes the playful dolphin with some hesitation. This is the first time she has seen one up-close, let alone touch. Riding a wild one would be like realizing a dream yet to be had. The moment she gets on his back and holds on tight, he sets off like a jet. The

dolphin is swimming a great deal faster than Lily was pulling her along, but Zy spots her friend racing alongside.

"This is beyond amazing!" shouts Zy.

"Not really..." replies Lily smugly.

A splash and the sun shines all around them. Zy tilts her head down and notes the ocean a few meters below her. It glitters like sapphires in comparison to the dull canvas of the sky above. Droplets of water sparkle in the air filling the moment with their own

magic. Barely an arm's reach away is Lily, bliss painted all over her face. Another splash and the three of them are back in the ocean's embrace.

The dolphin slows to a stop and clicks happily. Zy can still feel her heart pounding from all the excitement and she did not even have to do any swimming.

"Now 'that' was beyond amazing!" yells Zy exasperatedly.

Fleet Feet, Swift Fins #3.21

Ashelyn, Hyou, and Fallon walk happily back to Harp Hall. Fallon rides piggyback on Hyou since she is not used to trekking so much on foot. It is already dark with the sea of stars dotting the black sky. Without the companionship of the sun, it had become

pretty chilly in the forest. Each gust of wind sends a shiver through Ashelyn.

"How do you take this?" asks Ashelyn as another tremor shakes her body.

"It gets colder underwater," says Hyou. "Body hair and clothes are useless when wet, so we've adopted. Come closer."

Hyou pulls Ashelyn nearer to his side. Her arm brushes against his. Hyou feels very warm to the touch. Ashelyn clings to his arm gratefully as they go through the dark woods. Fallon silently holds on to Hyou. Both of her hands are firmly locked over her

boyfriend's heart.

"Do you guys wanna do this again?" asks Ashelyn.

"Sure!" exclaims Fallon. "Next time, I'll take you to one of my favourite places!"

When the three of them arrive back at the dorm, they find everyone else there. Mark and Kara are asleep on top of each other on the couch. Zy and Lily chat animatedly about dolphins but quickly get up to greet their friends. A wonderfully eventful day has

come to a close.

Midterms are a desperately hectic time of the semester. Despite it seeming like a party school, Southern Seas University is highly demanding in academics. The mermaids wear as light an amount of clothes as ever, but their backpacks get heavier by the day.

Instead of the quad or the River Greek, the Grand Library of All Oceans has become the center of student life. It is a lot more quiet than normal, though the tension buzzes in everyone's ears.

A young man at the gate walks in not knowing what he has just thrust himself into. The students go about without taking note of his presence. They are much too busy with their own business to see his ragged clothing or tired face. However, just being here has

brought a smile to the man's face. He pulls out a paper and reads the clumsily scribbled mess on it to himself.

"Number sixteen... Harp Hall..." He tucks the paper back into his pocket. "Please be home... Ashelyn..."
